Under the Mistletoe by Jill Shalvis

Under the Mistletoe is a great and enjoyable read. If you have read the other Lucky Harbor books then you will appreciate this book more. In this book we get Mia's story. Mia and Nick are a couple. Mia and Nick have a lot in common both being given up at birth by the parents. Yet Mia had a loving adopted family and when she reconnected with her birth parents Tara and Ford she develops a relationship equally great. Nick did not have that loving adopted family and re-connection Mia did. When Mia goes home for her aunts wedding her and Nick have a falling out of sorts.

I really enjoyed this short holiday romance. I really enjoyed catching up with Tara and Ford, Sawyer and Chloe and Maddie and Jax. I missed them. I enjoyed the part where Carlos makes a reappearance. I enjoyed seeing Nick go through his struggles and seeing how he loved Mia so immensely. I enjoy reading Jill Shalvis books. She is an amazing author. The plot of this book was very steady and the characters were lovable and realistic. Jill Shalvis knows how to write a book. I have laughable and heart swoon worthy moments. This is just an all around amazing read.

As much as I love to take a trip to Lucky Harbor, Under the Mistletoe was a little bit flat for me. Under the Mistletoe takes place about 5 years after Chloe and Sawyer's book, At Last. Under the Mistletoe could be read as a stand alone novella but you'd be missing all of the character's backgrounds in relation to Mia.

I'm not really a fan of novellas or anthologies because they are too short for me. I was especially annoyed that Under the Mistletoe finished when my was only at 65%. I really find that misleading while reading and gauging how far I am into the book and how much longer is left. 65% is way to short. I feel cheated.

Both Nick and Mia were adopted children and both had very different experiences with their upbringing. Their backgrounds played heavily on how they each approached their relationship.

Something that bugged me was how Mia surprised Nick with an airline ticket back to Lucky Harbor as a present and then sprung it on him the very night before they'd have to leave. I kind of thought that was inconsiderate really. She was hurt that he wasn't eager to go. She must have had an inkling on what his reaction was going to be because it just felt wrong to give him such a present (and what it represented) at her doorstep the very night before.

I was completely okay that Jill Shalvis didn't have Mia paired off with Carlos, her teen boyfriend from previous books. I am glad that Carlos made an appearance in the story and everything was okay between them.

Any moment with Ford, Mia's biological father, is a good moment. I adore his personality and how he interacts with Mia and her biological mom, Tara. I will admit to wishing there was a bit more of Ford in Under the Mistletoe but I understand it was not his story to tell.

I was glad that Nick flew to Lucky Harbor to find Mia. I wish there was more written about Chloe and Sawyer's wedding as that was another reason I purchased Under the Mistletoe. There are only some very minor scenes at the end. I guess overall I would have just liked it longer.

Teasers meddling mom, hose them off, sexy houseboat cruise
I'm a big fan of the Lucky Harbor series, and it was delightful to go back there for a Christmas Eve wedding in this short (80 pages) novella, BUT... the lead character annoyed me.

22 y.o. Mia and (24 y.o.?) Nick have been physically and emotionally involved for six months. Both have in common having been given up for adoption at birth, but Mia had the benefit of having a warm. loving adopted family, and THEN discovering an equally warm extended biological family in Lucky Harbor. Nick bounced around in a series of foster homes, so the idea of a big family gathering is something more triggering than enticing.

Despite knowing this about her boyfriend, Mia decides to spring on him, at the last minute, a ticket to go home with her for her aunt's wedding and the holidays. Nick freaks out and reacts badly. When he has a little time to digest it (overnight), he realizes how much Mia means to him; tries calling to tell her so, goes to her place at dawn, and then follows her to Lucky Harbor to win her back.

While it makes sense that Mia's people, from her family to her ex-boyfriend Carlos, will take her side and be protective of her, I wanted to shake her for her insensitivity to Nick. IMO, he was not the only one who needed to be making up for past mistakes; the whole fight/breakup occurred because Mia had expectations of how Nick "should" react, when she basically ambushed him. I felt disappointed all the compromises and emotional journeying seemed to be on Nick's side, rather than from Mia as well.

It speaks to this author's skill that I got as mad at this character as if she were a real person. Certainly with young love, we do have unreal expectations and heartburnings over small misunderstandings. The descriptions of Lucky Harbor are delightful, the Christmas wedding is sweet and funny. If you enjoy "visiting" Lucky Harbor, it's well worth reading this for a glimpse of your other favorite characters.
